London: 29 March 2009 A rare treat this afternoon. Dozens of stars, no rain and no heaving crowds. The awards were held at the Grosvenor House Hotel and only a few in the know folk showed up to man the barricades early on. It still meant an eight hour wait and plenty of tension among fans, autograph wanters and camera folk while waiting for the barriers to go up and plenty of confusion as we were went here, there and back here again. Fan pressure was relieved when lots of our number were allowed inside the hotel gates to flank the red-carpet. I stayed outside cosy in a corner protecting my nearly back to normal shoulder. Stars started arriving just after four and it was non stop for nearly two hours. My fan line friend had a board signed by more than thirty of the fantastic and the excellent and got a two heads picture with most all of those. What a souvenir. Stars were pleased to spend time posing and chatting and there were only a few occasions when there was more than one celeb at a time passing us to get on the red carpet. There was plenty of security to ensure no stray paps got in front of the barrier and spook the stars like at the Olivier awards recently. See my film on that event to know what I mean. A fantastic way to spend a Sunday, just wish I’d stayed a bit longer because the hard to catch Russell Crowe showed for a few minutes and I missed him. Doh!
